Washed ashore identity unknown

Installation grew out of research into my great grandfather William Lassiter (1837-1911), posted as a coastguard from Portsmouth to the Lizard on the Cornish coast. He was involved in saving people from drowning off shipwrecks and would have witnessed some of the wrecks where these bodies were washed ashore.

Memorial 'Washed ashore identity unknown'

One of the plaques in the memorial. I was struck by the repetition of the word 'unknown' written in the Parish Register against the bodies washed ashore.

Thirty memorial plaques dedicated to the unknown people washed ashore off Gunwalloe, Cornwall in the late 19th century
